Directors rushing to make Harvey Milk films

Tue, Apr 17th 2007, 17:59

Whose film about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the U.S., will make it to production first?  Directors Gus Van Sant and Bryan Singer are both out to make a movie about the San Francisco supervisor who was murdered while in office.

Variety reports that dueling films about Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood," taught studios a lesson.  The first film out of the gate usually wins.  Warner Independent is said to be anxious to begin production on "The Mayor of Castro Street," which is set to be helmed by Singer.

Van Sant will likely direct a script by another writer, though the film has yet to be picked up by a studio.
